Health Care

The granite state is consistently ranked as one
of the healthiest places in the country. Nashua’s health care services help define medical excellence in the state.

Southern New Hampshire Medical Center

Founded in 1891, Southern New Hampshire Medical Center retains the personal touch of a traditional community hospital while growing to meet community needs. Our physician network is one of the largest in southern New Hampshire with over 350 primary care and specialty care providers, proving that the best doctors choose the best hospital. State-of-the-art centers in childbirth and newborn intensive care, cardiology, breast health, emergency care, and healthy aging, ensure comprehensive care, comfort and convenience for our youngest to our oldest patients. Strong partnerships with centers of excellence, such as Dartmouth Medical School, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lahey Clinic and Children’s Hospital in Boston, work to provide seamless access to “best of the best” care.

Our newly designed nursing units offer single rooms for greater patient privacy and comfort. The Family Center at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center combines the area’s only Newborn Intensive Care Unit, The Birth Place — the most popular labor and delivery suite in Greater Nashua — and a new 3500 square foot, state-of-the-art Pediatrics Unit. The Nashua Center for Healthy Aging, the first of its kind in greater Nashua and the second in the state, provides specialized comprehensive care for the mature adult.

Our Emergency Room, a designated Level II regional trauma center, is currently one of the busiest in the state with over 45,000 annual visits. Our Cardiology Services offer greater expertise to Nashua through our affiliation with Lahey Clinic, nationally recognized for excellence in cardiac care. Lahey cardiologists are on staff to care for patients, diagnose heart problems and perform cardiac catheterizations. A $17 million construction project broke ground in July of 2004, expanding and renovating our emergency room, creating an entirely new cardiology center, and making room for the future expansion of surgical services. This major project will ensure that our doctors have the tools they need to deliver a higher level of care.

The Medical Center offers innovative health education programs, such as Community Medical School and Fit & Healthy KIDSTYLE! For more information on our programs and services or a copy of our Provider Directory and Guide to Services, call HEALTHMATCH at 577-CALL (2255.)

St. Joseph Hospital

For more than 90 years, St. Joseph Hospital has provided compassionate, high-quality healthcare services to the Greater Nashua community, meeting the growing healthcare needs of our community through clinical centers of excellence in breast care, cardiovascular care, oncology, acute rehabilitation and childbirth. St. Joseph Hospital has experienced exceptional growth in its inpatient and outpatient activity through the development of these programs. Expectations are for this trend to continue and plans for a $25 million expansion are underway to meet the needs of both current and future patients. Preliminary plans envision a two-story ambulatory building with a central atrium, providing patients a convenient “Main Street-like” access to numerous outpatient programs.

The Breast Care Center at St. Joseph Hospital is dedicated to the treatment, diagnosis and prevention of breast disease. On-site medical staff includes a specialty-trained breast radiologist and breast surgeon, who also consult with patients directly at the center. Patients diagnosed with breast disease are assigned a specialty-trained nurse to help guide and reassure each person through the diagnosis and treatment stages. To help prevent future incidents of breast disease, The Breast Care Center will begin offering genetic screenings, this fall, for persons who have a family history of this disease.

The Cardiovascular Center is greater Nashua’s first facility to provide a unique blend of both cardiac and vascular services to treat patients in one convenient location. The center’s clinical team includes cardiologists from the New England Heart Institute at Catholic Medical Center, radiologists and surgeons, plus specialty-trained nurses and technicians. Our latest programs such as electrophysiology treatment, endographic aortic repair and specialty clinics in diabetes, wound care, cardiac rehabilitation, nutrition and anti-coagulation demonstrate our commitment to the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

Three years ago St. Joseph Hospital expanded its chemotherapy program by announcing a collaborative program with Dana-Farber/Partners CancerCare, the first of its kind in New Hampshire.

The Rehabilitation Center at St. Joseph Hospital is a 24-bed acute rehabilitation unit that treats patients who have suffered a stroke, head trauma, amputation or joint replacement surgery. The unit is overseen by a Medical Director and has a clinical partnership with Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.

The Childbirth Center offers a wide variety of personalized maternity services, including private rooms, certified lactation consultants, one-to-one teaching by our skilled nurses and alternative birthing options.
